Biography
A. E. W. Mason (1865–1948) was an English novelist, short story writer, and politician. Born in London, he was educated at Oxford and worked as an actor before turning to writing. He is best known for The Four Feathers (1902), a classic adventure novel about cowardice and redemption in colonial Africa. He also created Inspector Hanaud, one of the first great fictional French detectives, in At the Villa Rose (1910). Mason served in the Secret Intelligence Service during both World Wars. His novels combine adventure, mystery, and psychological insight.
