Adam Mickiewicz
Biography
Adam Mickiewicz (1798–1855) was a Polish poet, dramatist, and political activist, regarded as the greatest poet in Polish literature and one of the greatest in all of European Romanticism. Born in the Russian Empire (now Lithuania), he was a leader of Polish Romantic nationalism. His masterwork, Pan Tadeusz (1834), is Poland’s national epic. He also wrote the dramatic poem Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve) and numerous lyric poems. Mickiewicz spent much of his life in exile in Paris, where he lectured on Slavic literature and remained active in the cause of Polish independence.
