Biography
Aleksandr Kuprin (1870–1938) was a Russian novelist and short story writer, one of the leading realist authors of the early twentieth century. Born in Narovchat, he served as a military officer before turning to literature, drawing on his army experience for his breakthrough novel The Duel (1905). Kuprin wrote with vivid, compassionate realism about soldiers, prostitutes, circus performers, and other marginalized figures. He emigrated after the Russian Revolution but returned to the Soviet Union in 1937, dying shortly after. His work is distinguished by its psychological depth, moral empathy, and precise observation of Russian society.
