Andre Norton (born Alice Mary Norton, 1912–2005) was an American science fiction and fantasy author, one of the most prolific and influential writers in the genre. Over a career spanning seven decades, she wrote over 300 novels and was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master Award from the World Science Fiction Society and the SFWA Grand Master Award. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she legally changed her name to Andre Alice Norton because male pen names sold better in science fiction. Her works include the Witch World series, the Time Traders series, the Beast Master series, and numerous standalone novels. Norton was known for creating accessible, adventure-driven science fiction featuring young protagonists discovering alien worlds, time travel, and cross-species communication. She mentored many younger authors and her home served as a library and gathering place for the SF community.
