Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was a Welsh author and mystic best known for tales of supernatural horror and hidden wonder. Born in Caerleon, Wales, Machen drew on Celtic mythology and his sense of a numinous reality lurking beneath the everyday world. His stories of ancient evil surviving in the modern world influenced H. P. Lovecraft, who called him one of the greatest living authors of weird fiction. Machen’s The Hill of Dreams is considered a masterpiece of decadent literature.
