Arthur Ransome (1884–1967) was an English journalist, author, and sailor best known for the Swallows and Amazons series of children's adventure novels. Before becoming a children's author, Ransome had a remarkable career as a foreign correspondent in Russia, witnessing the Revolution firsthand and marrying Trotsky's personal secretary. His twelve Swallows and Amazons books, beginning in 1930, follow children on sailing, camping, and exploring adventures in the English Lake District and Norfolk Broads. The series is celebrated for taking children seriously as competent, independent adventurers.
