Biography
Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1855–1934) was an English dramatist who became the leading playwright of the late Victorian and Edwardian stage. Beginning as an actor, Pinero turned to writing and produced a series of popular farces before tackling serious social drama. His play The Second Mrs. Tanqueray (1893) was a sensation, bringing the “problem play” to the English stage and addressing the double standard applied to women's sexual morality. Pinero wrote over fifty plays and was knighted in 1909. Though later overshadowed by Shaw and Wilde, he was instrumental in elevating English drama from melodrama to serious theater.
