Newton Booth Tarkington (1869–1946) was an American novelist and dramatist who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice — for The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) and Alice Adams (1921). Only Faulkner shares this distinction. Born in Indianapolis, Tarkington documented the transformation of American Midwestern life as small-town society gave way to industrialization and urban sprawl. His Growth trilogy traces this change through three generations, while his comedies of adolescence remain beloved classics.
