Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593) was an English playwright and poet, the most important dramatist of the Elizabethan era before Shakespeare. His plays—Doctor Faustus, Tamburlaine, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II—explore ambition, power, and transgression on a grand scale.
