Biography

David Herbert Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English novelist, poet, and essayist whose works explored human sexuality, emotional vitality, and industrial civilization’s damage to the human spirit. Born into a Nottinghamshire mining family, Lawrence drew on his working-class roots throughout his career. His major novels — Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover — were revolutionary in their frankness about desire and relationships, often provoking censorship. Lawrence lived a restless, nomadic life across Europe, Australia, and America, dying of tuberculosis at 44.
