Dashiell Hammett (1894–1961) was an American novelist and short story writer who revolutionized detective fiction. A former Pinkerton operative, Hammett drew on his real-world experience as a private detective to create a new kind of crime fiction—tough, realistic, and morally complex. His five novels, written between 1929 and 1934, established the hard-boiled detective genre: Red Harvest and The Dain Curse introduced the nameless Continental Op, The Maltese Falcon created Sam Spade, and The Thin Man featured Nick and Nora Charles. Hammett’s lean, precise prose style influenced Raymond Chandler, Ross Macdonald, and generations of crime writers.
