E. M. Forster

Biography

Edward Morgan Forster (1879–1970) was an English novelist, essayist, and liberal humanist whose novels explore class, hypocrisy, and the difficulty of genuine human connection. Educated at King’s College, Cambridge, Forster published most of his fiction between 1905 and 1924. A Room with a View, Howards End, and A Passage to India are ranked among the greatest English novels of the twentieth century. Forster was also an influential literary critic whose Aspects of the Novel remains a classic of literary theory. He was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and a lifelong advocate for civil liberties and tolerance.
