Biography
Edna Ferber (1885–1968) was an American novelist, short story writer, and playwright who became one of the most popular and commercially successful authors of the 20th century. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, and began her career as a newspaper reporter. Her novels—including So Big (1924, Pulitzer Prize), Show Boat (1926), Cimarron (1929), and Giant (1952)—portrayed the American experience through vivid regional settings and strong female characters. So Big won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and Show Boat was adapted into the landmark musical. Ferber co-wrote several Broadway plays with George S. Kaufman.
