Edward Whymper
Biography
Edward Whymper (1840–1911) was an English mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author who led the first ascent of the Matterhorn on July 14, 1865—an achievement immediately shadowed by tragedy when four of the seven climbers fell to their deaths during the descent. Whymper's account of his climbing career, Scrambles Amongst the Alps, became one of the most famous mountaineering books ever written. He was also a talented wood engraver and illustrator who provided his own drawings for the book. Whymper later explored the Andes and Greenland. The Matterhorn disaster marked a turning point in the public perception of mountaineering.
