Elias Lönnrot
Biography
Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) was a Finnish physician, philologist, and collector of folklore who compiled the Kalevala, Finland's national epic. Lönnrot traveled extensively through rural Finland and Karelia collecting oral poetry from traditional singers, then organized and edited this material into a coherent epic poem. The Kalevala, first published in 1835 and expanded in 1849, became the foundation of Finnish national identity and was instrumental in the development of Finnish language and culture. It deeply influenced J.R.R. Tolkien, who studied Finnish partly to read the Kalevala in the original and drew on its mythology for his own legendarium.
