Biography
Robert Erskine Childers (1870–1922) was an Anglo-Irish writer and nationalist whose life was as dramatic as his fiction. He served in the Boer War, wrote The Riddle of the Sands (1903)—considered the first modern spy novel—served in World War I, smuggled guns for Irish nationalists, served in the Irish government, and was executed by firing squad during the Irish Civil War. The Riddle of the Sands warned Britain about the threat of German naval invasion and is credited with influencing the establishment of naval bases on the English east coast. It remains one of the finest thrillers ever written.
