Biography
George Douglas Howard Cole (1889–1959) was an English political theorist, economist, historian, and detective novelist. A leading figure of British democratic socialism, Cole wrote extensively on economics, guild socialism, and labor history. With his wife Margaret Cole, he also wrote over thirty detective novels featuring the gentleman detective Superintendent Wilson. The Coles' mysteries are noted for their fair-play construction and social observation. Cole was also a major figure at Oxford, where he held the Chichele Chair of Social and Political Theory. His detective fiction represents a fascinating intersection of political intellectualism and popular entertainment.
