She published her first novel, The Black Moth, at age 19. Over a career spanning five decades, she produced over 50 novels known for meticulous historical research, sparkling dialogue, and witty characterization. Her Regency romances set the template that the entire genre still follows, while her detective novels earned praise from contemporaries including Dorothy L. Sayers.
