Godfrey R. Benson

Biography

Godfrey Rathbone Benson, 1st Baron Charnwood (1864–1945), was a British politician, biographer, and man of letters. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Benson served as a Liberal Member of Parliament and later in the House of Lords. He is best remembered for his biographical works, particularly his acclaimed biography of Abraham Lincoln, which brought the American president’s story to a wide British audience. Benson’s writing combined careful historical research with literary grace, making complex political and historical subjects accessible to general readers. His lesser-known work Tracks in the Snow explores themes of mystery and detection with the same clarity of style. Benson was active in public life throughout his career, contributing to debates on education, social reform, and Anglo-American relations.
