Biography

Harold Frederic (1856–1898) was an American journalist and novelist whose fiction explored the tensions between religious orthodoxy and modern skepticism in small-town America. Born in Utica, New York, Frederic worked as a newspaper editor before becoming the London correspondent for The New York Times, a position he held for over a decade. His novels, rooted in the Mohawk Valley region of upstate New York, combine realistic social observation with psychological depth. The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896), his masterpiece, is considered one of the finest American novels of the nineteenth century—a penetrating study of a young minister’s intellectual and moral crisis. Frederic’s other works include historical novels set during the American Civil War and contemporary fiction examining American and British society. His dual career as journalist and novelist gave his fiction a keen eye for social detail and institutional hypocrisy. Frederic died suddenly in England at forty-two, cutting short a career that had established him as one of the most perceptive American realists of his generation.
