Henry Fielding

Biography

Henry Fielding (1707–1754) was an English novelist, dramatist, and magistrate widely regarded as one of the founders of the English novel. Born into a minor aristocratic family in Somerset, Fielding first achieved success as a playwright in London’s theatre world before government censorship of the stage drove him to fiction. His masterpiece, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749), is considered one of the greatest novels in the English language—a sprawling comic epic that follows a good-hearted but impulsive young man through adventures across Georgian England. Fielding’s other novels include Joseph Andrews (1742), a comic parody of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, and Amelia (1751), a more serious domestic novel. His narrative innovations—the omniscient intrusive narrator, elaborate comic plotting, and panoramic social observation—established techniques that would define the English novel for centuries. Fielding also served as a pioneering magistrate who helped establish the Bow Street Runners, predecessors to London’s modern police force. His dual legacy as literary innovator and legal reformer makes him one of the most significant figures of eighteenth-century English culture.
