Biography
Ivan Turgenev (1818–1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright who played a pivotal role in the development of Russian realism. Born into a wealthy landowning family, Turgenev studied in Berlin and spent much of his life in Western Europe, becoming the first Russian writer to achieve broad European recognition. His novel Fathers and Children (1862) introduced the concept of nihilism into the Russian cultural vocabulary. His prose is celebrated for its lyrical beauty, psychological subtlety, and sympathetic portrayal of characters across the Russian social spectrum.
