J. J. Connington
Biography
J. J. Connington was the pen name of Alfred Walter Stewart (1880–1947), a Scottish chemist and detective fiction writer. Stewart was Professor of Chemistry at Queen’s University Belfast and published over a dozen mystery novels alongside his scientific work. His detective series featuring Sir Clinton Doifield, Chief Constable, became popular in the 1920s and 1930s for their ingenious plotting and scientific accuracy. His science fiction novel Nordenholt’s Million (1923) is considered a pioneering work of apocalyptic fiction. Connington was praised by contemporaries as one of the most intellectually rigorous writers of Golden Age detective fiction.
