Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, widely regarded as the father of the ghost story in English literature. Born in Dublin to a Huguenot family, he studied law at Trinity College Dublin before turning to journalism and fiction. Le Fanu owned and edited the Dublin University Magazine and published a steady stream of novels and supernatural tales. His vampire novella Carmilla (1872) predated Bram Stoker’s Dracula by twenty-five years. His ghost stories—collected in In a Glass Darkly—are masterpieces of atmospheric horror, while his sensation novels like Uncle Silas combine Gothic terror with intricate plotting.
