James Branch Cabell (1879–1958) was an American novelist whose elaborate fantasy romances set in the fictional medieval province of Poictesme made him one of the most celebrated and controversial writers of the 1920s. His novel Jurgen (1919) was suppressed on obscenity charges, which paradoxically made it a bestseller. Cabell’s ornate, ironic prose and his skeptical philosophy of romantic illusion influenced later fantasy writers including Jack Vance and Neil Gaiman. His Biography of the Life of Manuel, a 20-volume interconnected series, is one of the most ambitious literary projects in American fiction.
