Biography

Johann David Wyss (1743–1818) was a Swiss pastor and author best known for The Swiss Family Robinson, one of the most popular children’s adventure stories ever written. Born in Bern, Wyss studied theology and became a military chaplain and later a pastor. He originally wrote The Swiss Family Robinson for the entertainment and moral instruction of his four sons, creating a story that combines adventure, natural history, and practical education in an engaging narrative framework. The manuscript was edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss, a professor at the University of Bern, and first published in 1812. The novel has been translated into virtually every language, adapted into films, television series, and theme park attractions (including the famous Swiss Family Treehouse at Disney theme parks), and has inspired generations of survival and adventure fiction. Though Wyss published little else, The Swiss Family Robinson secured his place as one of the most influential authors of children’s literature.
