Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) was a Swiss author best known for Heidi, one of the most beloved children’s books in world literature. Born Johanna Louise Heusser in Hirzel, near Zurich, she married lawyer Bernhard Spyri and began writing to raise funds for charity. Heidi (1881) became an international bestseller and has been translated into over fifty languages. The story of an orphan girl thriving in the Swiss Alps captured readers’ imaginations worldwide and established the Swiss mountain landscape as a literary and tourist destination. Spyri wrote over fifty books for children, but Heidi remains her enduring legacy.
