Biography
John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was a British philosopher, political economist, and civil servant, one of the most influential liberal thinkers in history. Educated intensively by his father James Mill and Jeremy Bentham, he became the leading proponent of utilitarianism and classical liberalism. His essay On Liberty (1859) is the foundational text of modern liberal thought, and The Subjection of Women (1869) is a landmark of feminist philosophy. Mill served as a Member of Parliament and advocated for women’s suffrage, proportional representation, and the rights of the working class.
