Biography

Lloyd Cassel Douglas (1877–1951) was an American minister and novelist whose inspirational fiction became among the bestselling American novels of the twentieth century. Born in Columbia City, Indiana, Douglas served as a Lutheran minister for over twenty-five years before publishing his first novel at age fifty. His novels combine Christian themes with compelling storytelling, exploring how acts of faith and generosity transform lives. Magnificent Obsession (1929), his first novel, became a major bestseller and was adapted into films in 1935 and 1954. His later novels, including The Robe (1942) and The Big Fisherman (1948), were among the bestselling books of their decades. Douglas’s fiction reflected his belief that authentic Christian living—secret acts of kindness and personal sacrifice—could transform individuals and society. While his religious themes limited critical appreciation, his narrative skill and inspirational message attracted millions of readers.
