Biography

Louis Joseph Vance (1879–1933) was an American novelist and screenwriter best known for creating the Lone Wolf, one of the most popular gentleman-thief characters in early 20th-century fiction. Born in Washington, D.C., Vance began his writing career as a journalist before turning to fiction. His first novel, Doubloons, was published in 1902, but it was The Lone Wolf (1914) that brought him lasting fame. The character of Michael Lanyard—a reformed jewel thief who uses his criminal skills for good—captured the public imagination and spawned a series of sequels and numerous film adaptations, with the Lone Wolf appearing in over twenty movies between 1917 and 1949. Vance was a prolific author, producing adventure novels, mystery fiction, and screenplays throughout the 1910s and 1920s. His work combines the gentleman-thief tradition of Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin with American pulp energy, creating fast-paced narratives of crime, romance, and redemption. Vance also wrote for Hollywood, contributing to the early film industry. He died in 1933 in a fire at his New York home.
