Martin Andersen Nexø

Biography

Martin Andersen Nexø (1869–1954) was a Danish novelist and social realist writer, one of the most important Scandinavian authors of the 20th century. Born Martin Andersen in Copenhagen’s working-class Christianshavn district, he later adopted the name Nexø after the town on Bornholm island where he grew up in poverty. His childhood experiences of hardship, child labor, and class oppression profoundly shaped his literary vision. After working as a shoemaker, attending folk high school, and traveling in Southern Europe, Nexø began writing fiction that gave voice to the Scandinavian working class. His masterwork, Pelle the Conqueror (Pelle Erobreren, 1906–1910), is a four-volume epic tracing a working-class boy’s journey from impoverished farmhand to labor movement leader. The novel became an international sensation, translated into numerous languages, and was adapted into the 1987 Academy Award-winning film. Nexø also wrote the novel Ditte, Daughter of Man (1917–1921) and numerous short stories. A committed socialist, he supported the Soviet Union and spent his final years in East Germany.
