Mignon G. Eberhart

Biography

Mignon Good Eberhart (1899–1996) was an American mystery novelist, one of the most popular and prolific writers of the genre during the Golden Age of detective fiction. Born in University Place, Nebraska, she graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and began her writing career in the late 1920s. Her debut novel, The Patient in Room 18 (1929), introduced nurse Sarah Keate, an amateur detective who appeared in several subsequent books. Eberhart published over fifty novels and numerous short stories over a career spanning six decades. She was known for her atmospheric "Had-I-But-Known" style mysteries—suspenseful narratives told from the perspective of a woman in danger, often set in claustrophobic environments like hospitals, isolated houses, or fog-bound estates. Her work was enormously popular: five of her novels were adapted into films, she was a regular in major magazines, and she served as president of the Mystery Writers of America. Eberhart received the MWA Grand Master Award in 1971, recognizing her lifetime contributions to mystery fiction.
