Mikhail Artsybashev

Biography

Mikhail Petrovich Artsybashev (1878–1927) was a Russian novelist and playwright whose work caused enormous controversy in the years between the 1905 and 1917 revolutions. Born in Kharkov Province (modern Ukraine) to a Polish-Russian family, Artsybashev began publishing fiction in the early 1900s, gaining attention for his naturalistic style and provocative themes. His novel Sanine (1907) became one of the most scandalous and widely discussed books in Russian literature. The story of a young nihilist who advocates complete personal freedom, including sexual liberation, Sanine sparked a national debate about morality, individualism, and the role of ideology in Russian society. The novel was banned, prosecuted for obscenity, and blamed for inspiring a wave of suicides among young Russians—charges that were likely exaggerated but reflected the genuine shock the book provoked. Artsybashev continued to write novels, stories, and plays that explored themes of despair, sexual desire, and the futility of social conventions. After the Bolshevik Revolution, which he opposed, Artsybashev emigrated to Warsaw in 1923, where he edited an anti-Bolshevik newspaper until his death from tuberculosis.
