Biography
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an American novelist and short story writer, one of the central figures of American Romanticism. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, into a family with deep Puritan roots—an ancestor presided over the Salem witch trials—Hawthorne explored the dark legacy of Puritanism, sin, guilt, and moral ambiguity throughout his fiction. The Scarlet Letter (1850) is his masterpiece and one of the foundational novels of American literature. His symbolic, allegorical style and his psychological depth influenced writers from Melville to Henry James to Flannery O’Connor.
