P. T. Barnum

Biography

P. T. Barnum (1810–1891) was an American showman, businessman, and author, often called the greatest showman in history. Born in Bethel, Connecticut, he founded Barnum’s American Museum, promoted hoaxes and curiosities, and co-founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus. His autobiography, Struggles and Triumphs, was one of the best-selling books of the 19th century. The Humbugs of the World exposed frauds and hoaxes while Barnum cheerfully admitted to his own. He served in the Connecticut legislature and as mayor of Bridgeport. His name became synonymous with spectacle, promotion, and American entertainment.
