Biography

Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos (1741–1803) was a French novelist, army officer, and political figure who wrote one of the most celebrated and scandalous novels in European literature. Born in Amiens to a minor noble family, Laclos pursued a military career in the artillery, rising through the ranks while harboring literary ambitions. His only novel, Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons, 1782), was an immediate sensation and scandal—a brilliantly constructed epistolary novel depicting the sexual intrigues and psychological warfare of two aristocratic libertines in pre-revolutionary French society. The novel’s frank treatment of sexual manipulation and its implicit critique of aristocratic morality made it both wildly popular and officially condemned. Beyond his literary achievement, Laclos was politically active during the French Revolution, serving the Duc d’Orléans and later Napoleon. He contributed to the development of artillery tactics and wrote theoretical works on women’s education. He died of dysentery while commanding artillery in Italy. Despite writing only one novel, Laclos’s masterpiece has secured him a permanent place in the pantheon of European literature.
