Biography

Richard Austin Freeman (1862–1943) was an English novelist who revolutionized detective fiction by inventing the inverted detective story. A trained physician who practiced in colonial West Africa before ill health forced his return to England, Freeman created the forensic investigator Dr. John Thorndyke, whose cases are solved through meticulous scientific analysis of physical evidence. Freeman pioneered the “inverted mystery” format in which readers witness the crime first and then follow Thorndyke’s deductive process. His attention to real forensic science—fingerprints, blood analysis, microscopy, toxicology—set a standard for procedural accuracy that influenced the entire genre.
