Rafael Sabatini (1875–1950) was an Italian-English novelist who became one of the most popular writers of historical adventure fiction in the twentieth century. Born in Jesi, Italy, to an Italian father and English mother, he was educated across Europe and settled in England, writing in English, his fourth language. His swashbuckling novels Captain Blood (1922) and Scaramouche (1921) were massive international bestsellers, both adapted into successful Hollywood films. Sabatini’s vivid period settings, dashing heroes, and propulsive plotting made him the foremost successor to Alexandre Dumas in the adventure romance tradition.
