Rolf Boldrewood

Biography

Rolf Boldrewood was the pen name of Thomas Alexander Browne (1826–1915), an Australian novelist and pastoral manager. Born in London, he emigrated to Australia as a child and spent decades managing cattle and sheep stations across Victoria and New South Wales. His firsthand experience of frontier life, bushrangers, and the gold rush era provided rich material for his fiction. Boldrewood began writing novels in his fifties, serializing them in Australian newspapers. His masterpiece, Robbery Under Arms (1882–83), became one of the most celebrated works of Australian colonial literature. He wrote over a dozen novels exploring themes of outback life, social mobility, and justice in the colonies.
