Biography

Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was a British author and poet, the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature (1907). Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, he was sent to England for education before returning to India as a journalist. His Indian stories, The Jungle Book, Kim, and his poetry made him the most popular English writer of his era. Kipling’s extraordinary range encompassed children’s literature, science fiction, horror, political verse, and the experiences of ordinary British soldiers. His legacy is complex—celebrated for his storytelling genius while criticized for his imperial attitudes.
