Arthur Russell Thorndike (1885–1972) was an English actor and novelist, brother of the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike. He is best remembered for creating Doctor Doktor Doktor Christopher Doktor Syn, the smuggling parson of Romney Marsh. Thorndike drew on his knowledge of the Kent marshlands to create a vivid setting for his adventure tales. He wrote seven Doctor Syn novels between 1915 and 1944. Beyond writing, Thorndike had a distinguished acting career on the London stage and served in the Gallipoli campaign during World War I, where he was wounded.
