Biography
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was an American novelist and short story writer, one of the finest practitioners of literary regionalism. Born in South Berwick, Maine, she drew deeply on the landscape, people, and traditions of coastal New England throughout her work. Jewett began publishing stories in her teens and gained national recognition with Deephaven (1877). Her masterpiece, The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896), is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of American regionalist fiction. Jewett was a mentor to the young Willa Cather, who credited her as a major influence.
