Biography
Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) was a Swedish novelist and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909). Born in Värmland, she drew on the legends, folklore, and landscapes of rural Sweden to create a distinctive literary voice that blended realism with fantasy. Her debut novel The Story of Gösta Berling (1891) was a literary sensation, and The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906–1907), written as a geography textbook, became one of the most beloved children’s books in Scandinavian literature. Lagerlöf’s storytelling combined the power of oral tradition with modern literary technique.
