Biography
Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) was a Norwegian novelist and Nobel Prize laureate, one of Scandinavia’s greatest writers. Born in Denmark to a Norwegian family, she grew up in Christiania (Oslo) and worked as a secretary before publishing her first novel in 1907. Undset is best known for her monumental medieval trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920–22), a richly detailed portrait of fourteenth-century Norway. She won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928, primarily for this work. A convert to Catholicism, Undset explored themes of faith, morality, and women’s experience throughout her career. She fled to the United States during the Nazi occupation of Norway, returning after the war.
