Biography
Solomon Northup (1807–c. 1863) was an American memoirist and abolitionist, a free Black man from Saratoga Springs, New York, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. For twelve years he endured brutal captivity on plantations in Louisiana before being rescued through the efforts of friends and the legal system. His memoir Twelve Years a Slave (1853), written with the help of David Wilson, became an immediate bestseller and a powerful document of the abolitionist movement. Northup’s account provides one of the most detailed and harrowing firsthand descriptions of American slavery.
