Stephen Butler Leacock (1869–1944) was a Canadian humorist, writer, and political economist, widely regarded as one of the English-speaking world’s greatest humorists. Born in England, he grew up in Ontario and became a professor of political economy at McGill University in Montreal. Leacock’s literary fame rests on his comic writing, particularly Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914), affectionate yet pointed satires of Canadian small-town and urban life.
