Biography
Susanna Haswell Rowson (c. 1762–1824) was an English-born American novelist, actress, and educator. Born in Portsmouth, England, she moved to Massachusetts as a child, returned to England, then settled permanently in America. Her novel Charlotte Temple (1791) became the first American bestseller, going through over two hundred editions. Rowson was also a successful actress and playwright before founding one of the first academies for young women in America. She was a pioneering figure in American women’s literature, combining literary ambition with practical advocacy for women’s education.
