Thomas Bulfinch (1796–1867) was an American author best known for his accessible retellings of classical mythology and medieval legend. The son of the architect Charles Bulfinch, he worked as a bank clerk in Boston while pursuing his literary interests. His three major works—The Age of Fable (1855), The Age of Chivalry (1858), and Legends of Charlemagne (1863)—were combined after his death as Bulfinch’s Mythology. Written for a general American audience, these works made Greek, Roman, Norse, and Arthurian mythology accessible to generations of English-speaking readers.
