Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, and philosopher, one of the most influential Victorian thinkers. Born in Ecclefechan, he studied at the University of Edinburgh and became a prolific writer whose works shaped Victorian intellectual life. His major works include Sartor Resartus (1833–34), a philosophical novel; The French Revolution: A History (1837); On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (1841); and Past and Present (1843). Carlyle’s fiery, prophetic prose style and his emphasis on the role of great individuals in history profoundly influenced writers from Dickens to Emerson.
