Thomas Love Peacock (1785–1866) was an English novelist, poet, and essayist known for his satirical novels of ideas. A close friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Peacock spent much of his career at the East India Company, where he rose to Chief Examiner. His novels—including Headlong Hall (1815), Nightmare Abbey (1818), and Crotchet Castle (1831)—are unique in English literature: witty, conversational satires where characters representing different philosophical positions debate over lavish dinners. Peacock’s sharp, elegant prose and his ability to puncture intellectual pretension have earned him a devoted following.
